Helicopter Safety Review 2024

A detailed statistical review of Western-built turbine helicopters and accident trends since 1990.

The global fleet of Western-built civil turbine helicopters has more than doubled since 1990, reaching over 27,000 aircraft in service by the end of 2024. This growth includes both single- and multi-engine helicopters, operated in civil and government roles, with steady expansion across all regions.

In 2024, the fleet suffered 155 known operational accidents, of which 40 resulted in fatalities. The five-year moving average fatal accident rate stood at 0.15 per 100 helicopters, with single-engine types at 0.17 and multi-engine at 0.11. Both classes of helicopter had similar fatal accident rates 25 years ago but, since then, multi-engine helicopters have improved considerably and their fatal accident rate is now markedly better than that of single-engine helicopters.
