Business and Utility Turboprop Safety Review 2024

A detailed statistical review of single turbine powered aircraft and accident trends since 1990.

The use of single engine turboprop powered aircraft in business, personal and utility operations has increased very considerably since 1990 when there were only about 600 aircraft of this class in service worldwide, with nearly all of these being in use in the utility sector. By the end of 2024, this fleet had increased to over 8,000 aircraft – some 4,550 in the business/personal sector and 3,500 in utility.

In 2024, globally, these aircraft in business/personal use, suffered five fatal accidents resulting in the deaths of 20 occupants while those in use in the utility sector had seven fatal accidents with 18 fatalities. The fatal accident rate (five-year moving average) at the end of 2024 was 0.1 fatal accident per 100 aircraft at risk (business/personal) while that for those in use in the utility sector, perhaps not surprisingly given their generally more challenging operating environment, was 0.21 per 100 aircraft.
